About the Show
This show is a little bit of a departure for both of us- and that's exactly the point.
For me, it's a return to where I started. My roots as an artist are wildlife, painted in black and white, long before mountains and watercolour became my language. This body of work picks that thread back up and pushes it somewhere new: wildlife rendered in black acrylic paint pen on birch panel, set against impressionistic, felt interpretations of the habitat each animal calls home, built with spray paint. Mural supplies meeting gallery work. Something familiar and something I've never quite done before.
My Aunt Jackie brings a different energy- contemporary florals and landscapes in gouache and acrylic that prioritize feeling over accuracy, composition over representation. Her work is loose and intuitive in the best way, the kind of painting that knows when to stop.
Together we're two artists who love paint, love Alberta, and wanted to make something worth showing up for.
Meet the Artists
Jackie Ramsay
Jackie Ramsay is a Calgary-based artist with roots in Montreal, where she trained in commercial art before building a long career in the television industry. She has painted her whole life, works fluently across mediums and subject matter, and imbues her work with a loose, instinctive joy.
Emily Beaudoin
Emily Beaudoin is a painter, muralist and illustrator based in Canmore, Alberta, known for painting the peaks, flora and fauna of the Canadian Rockies. Her work lives at the intersection of fine art and everyday life- in homes, on walls and on functional outdoor gear you can bring on your adventures with you.
Once a year, Emily and Jackie gather with the rest of their artistic family at a house in Victoria- cozy days in the studio by the fire, endless cups of tea served with Uncle Dave’s legendary oat bars, plein air painting, and evenings spent critiquing each other's work or presenting on favourite artists and art history. There's always a gallery visit, a museum, or a local studio on the itinerary, and a new technique to try together- past years have included clay sculpting, gunpowder art, and silk dyeing. April 30th is a chance to see what that looks like on the wall.
