A few years ago I was on a solo road trip and stopped at the Giant Cedars Boardwalk to stretch my legs. I found a good spot, sat down against a tree with my sketchbook, and was just quietly working when a mother grizzly and her two cubs came out of the bushes.
They weren't interested in me at all. They wandered down to the stream, the cubs tumbling over each other, the mother moving slowly and completely unbothered. I sat absolutely still against that tree for I don't know how long. Magical and terrifying are both accurate descriptors for this experience, and it’s one that will stay with me forever, that’s for sure.
