This was the first painting in the Kin & Glow series, and it holds a lot of experimentation. I was layering spray paint onto birch panels, building the animals up through acrylic paint markers, brushed acrylics, and then going back over everything with more spray paint to give the pieces that misty, glowy look. It was a process of figuring out what would stick, what would blend, and how to make the mark-making feel intentional rather than chaotic.
I've always been drawn to bison, they're sacred, powerful and deeply mysterious. In 2017, after more than a hundred years absent from the Canadian Rockies, a small herd was reintroduced to Banff National Park. That act of restoration, of bringing something back that was thought lost, felt important to capture. This bison is part of that story, and painting it first in this new series felt like the right place to start.
This 20×24” original painting is acrylic and aerosol on a 1.5” gallery depth cradled birch panel. I hope it brings you a sense of peace, curiosity and wonder.
